Steps to move your Website – Beginners Guide

Everything goes fine when you don’t plan to change your web hosting and your website goes fine. The problem arises, however, when you need better resources or just simply want to switch the hosting provider. You need to transfer over your files! This article will give you the basic idea when you wants to move your website from one web host to another.

Backup: First, FTP to the hosting space and copy all files to a local drive.

  • I do a lot of customization to the templates of my WordPress blog and I want to make sure that those are not lost.
  • Add to that the code that is plugged in for analytics and ad-sense and I would rather not have to put those in again.
  • Any uploads, images, attachments, etc. to a post need to be preserved as well.

Backup: Next step is to log on to the database management console and backup all the data in your database. For WordPress users, you can also use the excellent Skippy’s Backup Plugin to backup the database.

Install the new Instance: Now, install the blogging software onto the new hosting space, including any plug-ins that you may want.

Restore: Now the tricky part.

  • Copy over all the necessary content files, templates, etc. from the backup you took to the newly installed blog.
  • Start the database manager and clear the data in all the tables (except any table which has the main options of the blog, which in case of WordPress is wp_options.)
  • Now pick up the data backed up earlier and insert that data into all corresponding tables.
  • Log in to the admin console and restore all the options as you had them set in the earlier blog.

Reconfigure DNS: Go to wherever your DNS for your domain is configured (9 out 10, this is wherever you have your domain registered). Change your Name Servers to use the DNS servers of the new hosting provider (this information should be readily available in the support documents of the hosting provider).

Configure Website: Now log in to the control panel at your hosting provider and configure the newly created blog to work with your domain.

After you have done all this, make sure that your old blog is still functional for a couple of days. The DNS changes will take from a few hours to a couple of days to propagate throughout the world. Also, try not to post for this duration, as depending on whether your DNS is updated or not, you could end up posting on your old blog.

Be A Blogger Series – Part 4: Everything You Need to Know about WordPress Media Manager

Introduction

In a blog post, we often need to insert images and videos . We might also need to attach certain files in the blog post. Videos and Images  are often used by bloggers to illustrate or demonstrate their points in a better way. This article going to deal with topic of  wordpress media manager.

How adding media works with Bloggers!

While writing a post in Blogger.com you can just use simple “Browse….” button to upload images and videos from local computer or from “Web Address URL”. In Blogger.com you can only add an image or video while you write a post.

How it works with the popular WordPress!

WordPress gives us two options under Media menu “Flash Uploader” and “Browser Uploader“. WordPress shows you all the uploaded files in a list and you can also edit them. We can also use “File URL” multiple times in different posts and pages.

Note: A “File URL” is the URL of where uploaded file can be accessed.

Steps to Add media in WordPress:

  1. Login to WordPress dashboard panel.
  2. Go to Media menu on left sidebar of the dashboard and click on Add New.
  3. You will get two options for uploading media which are Flash uploader and Browser uploader. By default WordPress has Flash uploader selected (see image below).
  4. Click on Select Files button and then add file from your computer. :-)
  5. Now once the file is uploaded it will show us options to add title, description, alternate text, etc..
  6. Copy “File URL” and paste it into your post or page content where you want.
  7. Click on the Save All Changes button.
  8. You can see all the uploaded media files in the Library menu. Also by clicking on edit option you can find “File URL“.               

Bonus Tips

WordPress allows us to do the same as Blogger.com but with an added feature which lets us add files and store them like your personal media library. The URL of these files can be shared with friends who can view images or videos directly without the need to create a post. :-)

Summary

With both Blogger.com and WordPress you can add images and videos easily. But  the biggest difference is that you can upload and manage files without writing a post on WordPress. This doubles up by using  WordPress blog like your own personal FTP which can store files online. So just rock and roll with WordPress!
